Rosacea is a long term or chronic condition with fluctuating progress and hence cannot be fully eradicated. However, we can actively treat it to prevent frequency and severity of flare ups.
Compared to Pico laser, which targets melanin (the natural pigment that gives skin its color), yellow lasers are designed to target oxyhemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells that makes blood appear red), making them an effective treatment for vascular-related skin issues such as rosacea and post-acne redness. At this stage of treatment, patients often report visible improvements in skin condition and redness. Early sessions aim to prime the skin and begin reducing redness by targeting superficial blood vessels. By the fifth session, doctors are usually able to compare current results with baseline photos to evaluate progress.
This guide provides information on expected progress at this stage, how to further optimize results, and what adjustments can be made if progress is slower than expected.

ToggleYellow laser works by sealing superficial blood vessels that contribute to redness. Early sessions usually reduce vessel activity and inflammation, laying the foundation for gradual improvements without overtreatment, so the skin can heal and adapt. This often results in fewer or less intense flushing episodes in rosacea, and visible reduction in redness from red post-acne marks.
It is important for patients to understand that individual progress varies. Some may only notice modest results after five sessions, depending on several factors discussed below.
Unlike superficial pigment issues such as freckles, which Pico laser targets more easily, rosacea and post-acne redness have different underlying mechanisms.
For rosacea, identifying and avoiding triggers (sun, alcohol, spicy food, stress) is as important as laser treatment. If triggers persist, flare-ups may reduce the perceived effectiveness of treatment.
For post-acne redness, uncontrolled acne leads to new areas of PIE, which may give the impression of poor progress even if existing marks are fading. This is why it is equally important to treat acne when dealing with post-acne marks.
Patients with both conditions usually see faster improvement in PIE compared to rosacea, since PIE is more superficial and directly linked to acne, while rosacea involves deeper vessels and chronic inflammation.
Other factors include:
Many different factors can affect the progress in the treatment of such conditions. It is imperative that we identify these factors pertaining to each individual so that we can further optimize the treatment for you.
At times, monotherapy with just yellow laser might not achieve the desired outcome. Strategically combining different treatments can accelerate progress and achieve better results.
Yellow laser targets vascular components, reducing erythema; creams contain anti-inflammatory ingredients
Synergistic reduction of redness and inflammation; improved control of flare-ups
Carbon peel exfoliates, reduces sebum production, yellow laser reduces erythema and vascularity
Improved skin texture;
reduced risk of persistent redness; reduces acne flares
Even after achieving the desired outcomes, it is recommended to continue maintenance therapies to prevent flares of acne and formation of new superficial blood vessels which can cause rosacea and post acne redness to recur. Maintenance sessions of yellow laser should be scheduled at least 2-3 months apart (depending on severity and frequency of flares). Incorporating other skincare products such as retinol-based creams, vitamin C or niacinamide serum can help enhance overall skin health as well, depending on your condition. This can be discussed in detail with your doctor.
By the fifth session of yellow laser, both doctors and patients should typically observe noticeable improvement in the condition be it rosacea or post acne redness. Despite this, if progress is felt to be too slow or plateaus, there are additional treatments and prevention strategies that both doctors and patients can undertake to ensure continued or accelerated improvement in the future sessions with the aim of achieving shared goals and expectations.
There is usually minimal downtime after yellow laser. Patients can experience some redness or warmth for a few hours to a day. Occasionally in rare cases there could be some slight peeling.
Typically, we advise patients to undergo treatment at 1-monthly intervals initially. Once the desired outcome has been achieved, sessions can then be spaced out to every 2–3 months for maintenance.

Brown acne marks are due to melanin which are best targeted with Pico laser whilst red acne marks are due to blood vessels and are therefore better targeted with yellow laser.
