RF Microneedling Not Working?
What to Try When Results Plateau

RF microneedling often begins with high hopes, especially when recommended for acne scars, sagging skin, or overall skin rejuvenation. However, some patients may notice that their results start to plateau after a few sessions. This can be confusing or frustrating, even when they’ve been consistent with their care plan

This does not necessarily mean the treatment has failed. Sometimes, the skin simply needs additional support. Here is how experienced practitioners assess and adjust treatment plans when progress seems to stall.

Why RF Microneedling Results May Plateau

Encouraging skin to produce more collagen

Natural Healing Phases of the Skin

Microneedling with radiofrequency works by encouraging your skin to produce more collagen. In the first one to four sessions, some patients may notice texture smoothing and mild plumping. But collagen formation is gradual. After the fourth session, progress can appear to slow down as the skin shifts from early inflammation to deeper tissue remodeling.

Skin Response Timeline:

TimeframeTypical Skin Reaction
Week 1Mild swelling, redness, tightness
Weeks 2-4Initial plumping and textural smoothing
Month 2-3Collagen remodeling begins
Month 4+Results may plateau if deeper triggers remain

Other Possible Factors

Lingering inflammation

If the skin barrier hasn’t fully healed between sessions, inflammation may linger and slow progress.

Lifestyle habits

Poor sleep, irregular skincare, or stress can affect healing and collagen development.

Underlying skin conditions

Deep acne scars or sagging may need more than just microneedling with radiofrequency.

What Our Doctors Look for When Results Stall

Is the Skin Still Responding?

Before switching anything up, our doctors assess how the skin is coping:

  • Is there redness that isn’t subsiding? This may suggest the skin is still inflamed or sensitive.
  • Does the skin seem dehydrated or dull? That could mean it needs more recovery time or support.
  • Has post-care like sun protection and moisturising been followed well? These habits can affect how well the skin heals between sessions.

Progress Evaluation Checklist

Before switching anything up, our doctors assess how the skin is coping:

  • Has skin texture improved since session 1?
  • Are any areas still visibly sagging or scarred?
  • Is pigmentation becoming more pronounced?

If two or more areas aren’t showing progress, the treatment plan may be reviewed and adjusted.

Skin texture improved

When RF Microneedling Isn’t Enough On Its Own

Collagen Skin Booster

Collagen skin boosters target the skin’s hydration and elasticity. When hydration and texture improvements start to taper off, our doctors may introduce a collagen skin booster. This injectable treatment works differently from RF Microneedling, it targets hydration at a deeper level and supports overall skin recovery.

Doctors may recommend it when:

  • The skin remains dry despite consistent moisturising, suggesting deeper dehydration
  • The skin looks dull or thin after a few RF sessions, indicating a need for added regenerative support

Morpheus8 RF Microneedling

For patients with more persistent laxity or acne scarring, Morpheus8 RF Microneedling offers deeper thermal stimulation compared to standard RF microneedling. It reaches into the lower dermis, making it useful when the skin isn’t responding fully to surface-level treatments.

Doctors may introduce Morpheus8 if:

  • Deeper acne scars are still visible after multiple RF sessions
  • Sagging around the lower cheeks or jawline hasn’t improved as expected Morpheus8 targets deeper layers of skin and is useful when:
  • Standard RF isn’t helping deeper acne scars
  • Skin around the jawline or cheeks is still sagging

Treatments That Complement RF Microneedling

Fractional CO2 Laser for Skin Texture

When acne scars or thickened skin texture persist despite RF microneedling, our doctors may phase in a fractional CO2 laser. This resurfacing treatment helps with the surface layer scars.

Doctors may recommend it to:

  • Soften the edges of boxcar or ice-pick scars
  • Smooth uneven skin texture that hasn’t improved with RF alone

This option is only introduced once the skin barrier has fully recovered from prior sessions.

Pico Laser for Pigmentation

For patients with residual pigmentation after acne scar treatment, Pico Laser is often added to clarify skin tone. It supports brightening by targeting excess melanin and inflammation.

Doctors may recommend it to:

  • Reduce acne related post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or acne marks
  • Refine texture and tone for patients working toward a clearer, more luminous complexion Pico Laser is often used when there’s lingering pigmentation after acne scar treatments.

It may help with:

  • Yellow or brown spots that remain after RF
  • Patients working toward a clearer, more even tone

Supporting the Skin Between Treatments

Skincare and Lifestyle Tips

How skin is cared for between sessions plays a big part in treatment results. Our doctors may suggest:

  • Using barrier-friendly, ceramide-based moisturisers
  • Rest and regular sleep to support healing
  • SPF50 Sunscreen daily

Planning Treatments Step-by-Step

At Astria, we don’t stack treatments. We space them out to support healing:

Phase 1

RF Microneedling for collagen induction

Phase 2

Boosters or CO2 for deeper concerns

Phase 3

Pico Laser or topical brightening for clarity

Avoid Self-Tweaking

What Not to Do When Progress Slows

Avoid Self-Tweaking

  • Don’t increase treatment frequency on your own
  • Avoid switching skincare brands too often
  • Hold off on acids or exfoliants unless approved by your doctor

Stick With Doctor-Guided Adjustments

Our doctors continuously review your skin’s condition and will make careful changes based on how it responds-not just based on time or expectations.

When Can You Expect Progress Again?

With the right adjustments, many patients see continued improvement:

4-6 weeks after adding a skin booster

6-8 weeks after CO2 laser treatment

Gradually over 2-3 sessions with Morpheus8

Plateaus aren’t a failure-they’re part of the process. With the right support, your skin can move forward again.
RF microneedling continues to be a trusted treatment for acne scars

Treating Plateaus Like a Natural Part of the Journey

RF microneedling continues to be a trusted treatment for acne scars in Singapore. But like any skin journey, it doesn’t always move in a straight line.

At Astria, our doctors use plateaus as a prompt to reassess-not to stop. Whether that means adding Morpheus8, supporting the skin with boosters, or fine-tuning your plan with Pico Laser, we adjust based on how your skin is responding. Progress doesn’t always mean doing more-it’s about doing what your skin needs, one step at a time.
